Artist: Boni and Dave Deal

Mediums: Raku Ceramics

Dave and Boni Deal are a husband and wife team that has collaborated in clay for over 40 years, working full-time at their rustic home studio in the Cascade Mountains foothills.

The Deal’s pottery is known for large classical forms and intricate surface designs with Pacific Northwest nature themes. A unique aspect of their work is the 160-acre wooded environment of the Deal’s off-the-grid home and workshop, with no electricity, water from the creek, and a much-used kick-wheel.

PNW environment is reflected in their claywork, such as, “heron urns,” “leaf-imprint pots,” and landscape triptychs and wall platters. Dave states “clay offers a lifetime of possibilities for expression.” Awe of nature motivates the couple, a high aspiration is to reflect God’s beautiful creation. Boni explains “plants, geology and wildlife are our recurring themes—timeless and relevant today, and even more so for the future.” Dave adds “a goal is to share wild places around us, even simple common wonders that can bring joy and beauty into daily lives.”
